Editorial Styleguide
This guide sets the editorial standards for CSUMB Strategic Communications. It does not dictate style for all. Those doing their editorial work independently may choose to follow a different set of editorial standards. When StratComm becomes involved in the process though, these standards become the rule.
Not a comprehensive style manual, this guide outlines standards adopted by StratComm in response to style questions that have arisen often in doing the university's work. For style questions beyond those covered in this guide, we consult the Associated Press Stylebook.
Because AP style is limited in scope to newswriting, we also consult a variety of excellent resources without favor for any single one to make many style decisions. That has been our clever way of justifying whatever decision we anticipate making from the start. We figure that if the major players cannot agree with each other, why should we agree with any of them. Instead, we research then choose what works best for CSUMB. We pride ourselves in being editorially eclectic and opinionated.
If you seek guidance on issues not addressed here, we're happy to consult with you. And remember, whatever you decide on whichever style issue you face, there is one rule that every editor and guidebook preaches above all others: Be consistent!
